All-Around SUPs v.s. Touring Boards
When it comes to choosing between an all-around or Touring paddle board, it’s not a question of which is better, but of what your personal paddling goals are! Let’s see how their features compare.
Construction
The difference between all around boards and touring boards comes down to a little something called hydrodynamics. When we look at how a board moves through the water, we examine how the shape of the board creates or reduces friction with the water we’re paddling through.
The All Around SUP’s rounded nose and rocker, also known as a planing hull, keeps the board on top of the water and offers extra stability and control in any waves or chop you might encounter. This design results in more maneuverability, which makes all-around boards perfect for a variety of paddling environments and water conditions, from flat-water to surf.
The Touring Board’s narrower shape and pointed nose, also known as a displacement hull, allows you to cut through the water as you ride. This construction decreases drag and allows you to track and glide faster and further with less effort. Touring boards can be particularly helpful on busy lakes, for paddle racing and if you plan to paddle off-shore in choppy conditions.
Performance
An All-Around Board is designed for just about any paddling environment and combination of passengers. Since the board glides over the top of the water, you’ll notice that the board is stable underfoot. They are highly maneuverable and can turn on a dime. Plus, the slightly wider deck makes the all-around great for accommodating a cooler, child or dog, without compromising stability. All-Around SUPs are perfect for a variety of activities, including leisurely paddles, SUP yoga, fishing and SUP surfing!
The Touring Board’s shape is going to help you find more speed and make longer distances much easier. With that comes a trade off for slightly less stability and maneuverability. The narrower nose creates more side to side motion as your weight shifts, making it less optimal for things like SUP yoga or carrying passengers. That being said, if you’re looking to win races, build miles, or paddle on the open ocean, a touring board is your best bet.
